I have a bit of a thing for retro mountain bikes and components, particularly those manufactured between 1988 and 1995. A hoarder is probably a good description of my approach, and Ebay has a lot to answer for.
I’ll be updating these pages over the coming weeks and months with details and photos of each as I know there are fellow sufferers out there.
My addiction isn’t just limited to the retro side of cycling though, and I’ll put the newer side of my arsenal on here as well. Stay tuned.
Follow the linksĀ below for details on each of my bikes.
First up will be my 1989/ 1990 “Bontrager OR”

My modern bikes – mountain, road and BMX
I think I will try to recommend this post to my friends and family, cuz it’s really helpful.
Many thanks for the feedback!
Thank you for saying this! Wish the mainstream media wouldn’t just regurgitate Astana’s tweets as gospel.
I feel more vindicated by today’s 2009 Tour de France stage 15 performance. Chapeau to Bradley Wiggins of the Garmin team. Garmin have their own agenda and I’m delighted to see Wiggo and Garmin bounce back from so much Astana negativity yesterday.
The commissaire was Dutch – and I couldn’t agree more with your thoughts.
dude, have you fully built the bike up yet
any thoughts?
any scratches- would you use clear nail varnish for any blemishes?
Hi Jules, I have, but being back at work means I never have any time to update this site (I set it up when I was off with a broken ankle / leg).
The spec has changed a little as well.
Headset…that’s a sore point! Currently has an FSA
Forks – went for some SID WCs
Wheelset – went for Hope Hoops / 355 combo from Wheelpro / Roger Musson
Chain – KMC SL
Grips – Egron – but the normal looking ones, and very good they are too.
Did a 28 mile loop a a “bedding in” ride a few weeks ago, and had a few rides since. I really like it, though it’s a little sketchy on the descents.
No scratches….yet
though it’s covered in mud so it probably is.
sounds good- you went for the world cups over the ordinary sid races- any reason?
i just purchased a second hand full build:
so the whyte race (green)
sid race
x0 gripshift
xo rear mech
hope mini’s
fsa bb 30 carbon crankset
mavic crossmax sl wheels
usual fsa finishing kit (stock parts)
not been out on it yet (trashed my hamstring- so unable to)
Thanks that was a good post!
You have a great blog! I will come back.
Hey Crell is it? I believe you posted a couple of weeks ago on retrobike, Looking for an ‘84 pistol pete?? Still interested? I have one. I’m in New York ( willing to ship if the price is right) I stripped it down yesterday after a few years hanging out in my parents garage. I started cleaning it up though. Solid 1984 Pistol Pete, one piece original uni seat, redline neck. I think I need to ditch the crap handlebars that are on there, but I have a lead on some nice original bars. let me know if your interested. Your the first one I am putting the word out too. Hit me back at ZachGrumet@Gmail.com. I look forward to hearing from you soon.
Zach
Thanks for the blog. I know enough about the topic but am always happy to find out additional information.
